In August's Q (British music magazine): "Escape.... from the bizarre space-fantasy cover art to the driving synth-guitar fusion elevating Steve Perry's white blues wail, this is the very pinnacle of pop prog. Fantastic songs, too - not least the majestic Stone In Love."

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
This month we are spotlighting: Jan!
Name: Jan
Hometown: Coventry, United Kingdom
Occupation: I am fortunate to have a job that I enjoy most of the time. I am an instructor for my company and
I write and present training on products that we sell, and systems that we use. Usually, my training pursuits take me
around the UK, but a few years ago (2002) I was lucky enough to be sent to the USA for 3 weeks and I trained some of
our people in San Francisco and New York. That trip was the first time I met Noel in person, another plus!
Family: I don't have much family; my mum lives in Coventry too - I recently moved to be closer to her as she is aging
and not as strong as she was. I have a sister, too, Valerie, who lives about 150 miles away. Other than that, I do have an Uncle
(Mum's brother) but we are not close, and he is currently sailing the oceans with his second wife, so we are never sure where
he is from one month to another.
Hobbies: Apart from co-hosting a Steve Perry website, I love movies and music, and I am a constant reader. I also belong to a
'Pub Quiz' team locally with some neighbors, and we occasionally win the weekly quiz! I am also studying for a degree and I have recently
registered for the final course that will bring me my award. I've had to delay this for a couple of years while 'life stuff' settled down.
When did you buy your first computer? My ex and I bought our first computer in 1993 but I didn't have internet access until 1997.
Guess what the first name was that I typed into a search engine!
Where is your current computer located? I use a laptop, which is usually on a folding table right by the sofa in my lounge.
Been a fan how long? I was first 'introduced' to Steve and Journey by a friend who insisted that I listen to
Escape!
He had previously played me some of Journey's prog-rock and it hadn't been to my taste. So this was in 1981 - I just fell in love with
Steve's voice. Then, later, in 1982, the BBC broadcast a portion of the MTV Houston concert (which we now have to keep, thanks to Steve!)
and I was simply blown away by the band, and particularly Steve, singing live with so much talent and exuberance. Steve set a new benchmark
for what I demand from a live performer.
First time I heard Steve sing I felt: Wow!
Seriously, I was completely hooked by the second line of
Don't Stop Believin'!
Favorite CD: Still
Escape. There are moments on other CDs which I prefer to anything on
Escape, but as a complete
work, that one is my favorite.
If you could put one song in a time capsule for future generations what
would it be and why? Tough question as I would like to select one from Journey and one from Steve's solo catalogue!
From Journey, it would be
Who's Crying Now. This one song captures everything that is Journey to me; melody, musicianship, a
wonderful vocal and that to-die-for guitar solo. After all these years, I never grow tired of hearing it. However, probably my
favorite song of all is Steve's solo
For The Love Of Strange Medicine which speaks to me in all sorts of ways. I would like to
include that for its yearning melody and its excellently expressed lyric.
Personal Comments: Steve Perry's music has been part of my life for many years, and in sharing my appreciation for his work with
others, I have been blessed to make new friendships. I'd love to hear new music from Steve, but if he's not inspired or motivated to create
anything new, then that's OK too; he has certainly given us plenty to enjoy over the years.

"I don't think of myself as a star. I think of myself as an entertainer - I'd rather be an entertainer."
What's the difference? "I don't know," says Steve, "I guess we're rockstars. I guess that's what people
want to call us. Sometimes I feel like one, nine times our of ten I don't.
"I haven't created nothing - you're looking at me, I'm me. I'm a little more active when I'm onstage.
I'm nervous offstage, I'm comfortable onstage.
My audience wants me to be what they are, what they've lived and what they've experienced. They want to
see it. They want to hear it and they want me to sing it. They want to go through it and know that I've
gone through it and I can relate to it. It's nice to be able to relate and have a common goal."
