Pop is back - and that is good. With a slew of new
groups resurrecting radio-friendly music, there's no better time to take another look at a band
whose undying passion for pop was witness to its unstoppable rise to the charts -- and into memories
of millions of listeners.
Journey's newly re-mastered Greatest Hits, is more than just another
best-of-compilation or a nostalgic flashback to the late '70's and '80's. It's a chronicle of a band
whose sound stood out -- and still stands out -- in the pantheon of pop music. The unmistakable
vocals
of Steve Perry fill every song with a
steely urgency and passion. He alone made it cool to sing in a
wicked high tenor range. And Neal Schon's fierce guitars took the idea of "clean distortion" to a whole
new level.
Journey's legions followed them through their Bay Area beginnings through the
mega stardom that propelled seven straight albums to multi-platinum status. With driving intensity,
songs like Don't Stop Believin' and Separate Ways (World's Apart) both shook the airwaves.
Neal's rapid fire solo strafes the back half of Separate Ways (World's Apart) so intensely
that
you're left wondering if it was just one guitar. And the fine harmonies on Any Way
You Want It
showed yet another angle of the band's talent.
Journey's ballads also earned a well-deserved place in heavy radio rotation. The
earnest and tender Faithfully was know to make a strong man cry. Perry's smooth tenor carries
Who's Cryin' Now into the stratosphere. And the forgiving Open Arms is still a fave break-up-make-up classic.
In the here-today-gone-tomorrow world of rock, it's nice to know that talent still ensures longevity.
