When a rock band sells out the 20,000-seat Coliseum
twice in five hours a month before the shows, sold out
the 18,000-capacity Blossom Music Center twice last
summer and has a long string of hit albums and singles,
it should be called Arrived, Happening, Stardom or some
other superlative instead of Journey.
In any case Journey, which performs in the sold out Coliseum tonight
and tomorrow night, has made the long "journey" to the top,
and is now considered among the top rock acts in the world.
On top of all that Jules Belkin, who is producing the Coliseum
concerts, calls the musicians in Journey and the group's
management "the nicest people among the major rock acts."
Why is Journey coming back so soon?
"A lot of people didn't see our special indoor
production," said Herbie Herbert, Journey's manager.
Journey completed a lengthy U.S tour in December, and
most of the dates, including some with the Rolling Stones
- were in outdoor venues.
Journey has been top 10 on the WMMS
chart in GO with their Columbia album, "Escape." The group just released its fourth single, "Still They Ride", from
that double platinum (four million copies sold) LP.
The other three singles, "Who's Crying," "Don't Stop" and "Open Arms" also were top 10.
While the band is on its current tour, Herbert will be overseeing a move of Journey's Nightmare Inc. management headquarters from its long established Pacific Heights residential site to a new four story, 10,000-square-foot building just purchased at 1111 Beach/Fisherman's Wharf area of San Francisco. The move will not be completed for at least another month.
"Our building, the former Pacific Lumber Co.,
takes up an entire city block, "said Herbert. "It's the smallest city block in San Francisco, but it's a city block."
The building, which Herbert estimates to contain 25 offices, will bring together under one roof all of the far-flung Journey enterprises.
These include the lights, sound, staging and rigging services provided to the band in-house under Nocturne Inc.; Jim Welch Artists & Friends, which oversees graphics and marketing; The Daydream, Escape and
Barstow real estate partnerships; Weed High and Twist & Shout
publishing, and all the operations of the parent Nightmare Inc.,which Herbert says "furnishes the services of Journey to Columbia Records and to promoters and bookers throughout the world."
Herbert says he also anticipates the relocation of Journey's attorney and CPA to offices in the building, and says that video facilities will be installed in the board of directors' room.
