Steve Perry:
Talking "Street Talk"
Now that Steve Perry's "Street Talk" is such a big
success, and you've been hearing "Oh Sherrie" and "She's Mine" on the radio for
months now, you may want to know what the songs on the album mean to Steve
personally. Here, in his own words, are some thoughts he had in putting together
this blockbuster album for you:
* On Running Alone: "It's a statement
about not being afraid to make personal decisions even if it means the bottom line
is running alone."
* On Foolish Heart: "It touches upon the
conflict between head and heart decisions. Whether to fall in love or not. And ultimately,
the heart always wins."
* On Captured By The Moment: "It's about
a period in time and people back then who meant a lot to me. Sam Cooke, Jimi Hendrix,
John F. Kennedy, plus a lot more. Captured by the moment ..."
* On the songs about relationships: Go Away:
"This one is about a guy who inadvertently runs into an old flame who had caused him
a lot of grief in the past. Now she wants to rekindle the relationship, but he has
no desire because he's in love with someone else now. She's Mine is all about
a womanizer trying to steal the one you love, and telling him to get lost, she's mine!
Strung Out says that when a guy falls in love with a woman who belongs to
someone else, the agony he goes through leaves him completely strung out!"
Steve is also proud to have produced "Street Talk." "I really
think I'm capable of wearing several hats whether it be as a singer, songwriter,
performer or producer. You see, I had an idea of how I wanted this album to sound. So,
if I hadn't produced it myself, the end result probably would have been foreign to me.
It just wouldn't have sounded like what I heard in my head. It does now."
But just because Steve's been phenomenally successful as a
solo artist, it doesn't mean that he's abandoning Journey. In fact, the band is at
work right now on their latest album, so Steve Perry fans'll have more to feed their ears.
